The full Moon is its most familiar phase and the hardest to photograph: with the Sun shining straight on, crater shadows vanish and the surface looks flat. This image combines the sharpest moments from many frames taken with a 1-metre telescope.

The dark "seas" are lava plains that solidified three to four billion years ago; the bright ray system at the bottom is material thrown out by the young crater Tycho at the moment of impact.
