Yay'da Bir Küresel KümeA Globular Cluster in Sagittarius

Yay takımyıldızı, Samanyolu'nun merkezine baktığımız yön olduğu için küresel kümelerin en yoğun olduğu bölgedir. Bu küme, yüz binlerce yaşlı yıldızın kendi çekimleriyle bir arada tuttuğu bir küredir; merkezde yıldızlar o kadar sıktır ki birbirlerinden yalnızca ışık haftası uzaklıktadır.

Küresel kümeler galaksimizin en eski sakinleridir. Bu fotoğraftaki yıldızlar Güneş'ten önce, Dünya'dan önce, neredeyse Samanyolu'nun kendisiyle birlikte doğmuştur.

Sagittarius is the direction in which we look toward the centre of the Milky Way, and so the region where globular clusters are most abundant. This cluster is a sphere of hundreds of thousands of old stars held together by their own gravity; at the core the stars are so crowded that they lie only light-weeks apart.

Globular clusters are the oldest inhabitants of our galaxy. The stars in this photograph were born before the Sun, before the Earth, almost together with the Milky Way itself.
