M74 is the textbook example of a "grand design" spiral: two prominent arms unwind from the core with almost mathematical order. Yet its surface brightness is so low that amateur observers call it "the Phantom" — it is hard to find in a telescope.

The photograph shows the reward for the effort: hundreds of pink stellar nurseries and blue young star clusters along the arms. Because the galaxy faces us directly, its spiral structure is seen exactly as it is.
