Girdap GalaksisiThe Whirlpool Galaxy

Sarmal yapısı ilk fark edilen galaksi: Lord Rosse 1845'te dev teleskobuyla bu girdabı çizdiğinde, "bulutsuların" aslında yıldız adaları olabileceği fikri doğdu. Yanındaki küçük galaksi NGC 5195, M51'in kollarından birini çekip uzatarak bugünkü biçimini vermiştir.

Kollar boyunca dizilen pembe düğümler yıldız doğumevleri, mavi ışık ise genç ve sıcak yıldızlardır. İki galaksinin arasındaki soluk köprü, çekim savaşının hâlâ sürdüğünü gösterir.

The first galaxy whose spiral structure was recognised: when Lord Rosse sketched this whirlpool with his giant telescope in 1845, the idea that "nebulae" might be islands of stars was born. The small companion NGC 5195 has pulled one of M51's arms outward, giving it its present shape.

The pink knots along the arms are stellar nurseries, the blue light young hot stars. The faint bridge between the two galaxies shows that the gravitational tug-of-war continues.
