Güney Haçı'nın yanı başındaki bu küme, adını 19. yüzyılda John Herschel'den almıştır: "Renkli mücevherlerle dolu bir kutu." Mavi-beyaz genç yıldızların arasındaki turuncu kırmızı süperdev, kümenin renk kontrastını yaratır.

Yalnızca 14 milyon yaşındadır — evrenin ölçeğinde neredeyse yeni doğmuş. Buradaki en parlak yıldızlar Güneş'ten yüz binlerce kat daha fazla ışık verir ve birkaç milyon yıl içinde süpernova olarak patlayacaktır.

Next to the Southern Cross, this cluster was named in the 19th century by John Herschel: "a casket of variously coloured precious stones." An orange-red supergiant among the blue-white young stars creates the cluster's colour contrast.

It is only 14 million years old — almost newborn on the scale of the universe. Its brightest stars shine hundreds of thousands of times brighter than the Sun and will explode as supernovae within a few million years.
