Adı "üçe bölünmüş" anlamına gelir: Kırmızı salma bulutsusunu üç loba ayıran koyu toz şeritleri ona bu adı vermiştir. Hemen yanındaki mavi bulut ise aynı tozun yansıttığı yıldız ışığıdır — iki farklı bulutsu türü tek nesnede.

Trifid genç bir nesnedir, yalnızca birkaç yüz bin yaşında; merkezindeki sıcak yıldız çevresindeki gazı hâlâ iyonlaştırmaktadır. Yaz gecelerinde Yay takımyıldızındaki en çok fotoğraflanan hedeflerden biridir.

Its name means "divided into three": the dark dust lanes splitting the red emission nebula into three lobes give it the name. The blue cloud beside it is starlight reflected by the same dust — two kinds of nebula in one object.

The Trifid is young, only a few hundred thousand years old; the hot star at its centre is still ionising the gas around it. On summer nights it is one of the most photographed targets in Sagittarius.
