Ay'ın en fotojenik anı dolunay değil, ilk dördündür: Gece ile gündüzün sınırı olan "terminatör" çizgisinde Güneş yataydan vurur ve her krater, her dağ silsilesi uzun gölgesiyle kabartma gibi belirir.

1 metrelik bir teleskopla çekilen bu görüntüde güneydeki yayla kraterlerinin yoğunluğu ile kuzeydeki düz denizlerin karşıtlığı çıplak gözle görülmeyen bir netlikte. Aynı gölgeler her ay tekrarlanır, ama atmosfer hiçbir gece aynı değildir.

The Moon's most photogenic moment is not full Moon but first quarter: along the terminator, the boundary between night and day, sunlight strikes at a low angle and every crater and mountain range stands out in relief with its long shadow.

Taken with a 1-metre telescope, the image contrasts the crowded highland craters of the south with the smooth seas of the north at a clarity the naked eye never sees. The same shadows return every month, but the atmosphere is never the same twice.
